The highest hilltop in Lisbon is the place for the Castelo de São Jorge (Castle of St George). The castle stands above the city center of Lisbon to the east. The hill had its first fortifications around 200 B.C. After Afonso Henriques (the first king of Portugal) captured the castle in 1147, the castle was renovated and extended multiple times.
The Lisbon earthquake damaged the castle (as well as much of Lisbon) drastically in 1755. After being declared a National Monument in 1910, the restoration of the castle site begun in 1940. Today, the castle is in good condition and it is a fascinating place to see. It offers a spectacular view of the city of Lisbon and has very beautiful gardens, as well as a huge periscope in the Tower of Ulysses-Camera Obscura.
